On May 18, 1783, some 3000 United Empire Loyalists, refugees from the United States, disembarked their ships at Saint John to establish a city in the wilderness. Two years later, this city became “Canada’s oldest incorporated city” and the only city in Canada to be so constituted by Royal Charter.
On May 17, 1983, beside the site of this “loyalist landing”, the initial phases of the $100 million Market Square complex celebrated its grand opening. Included within this exciting development are the Trade Centre, the Saint John Regional Library, retail stores, restaurants and seven restored historic structures, with the magnificent Market Square Atrium as the focus. Below are 750 indoor parking spaces.
